Today was the first day of the second semester of my 1st year in law school. Though I had been staying in the law school for 6 months now, I still feel kind of nervous went I wake up the stairs and head for my classroom. Philippine Laws and Jurisprudence are always circling my mind. Not suprisingly, the professors did not show up and we waited for almost 3 hours with nothing. However, I did have a chat with my classmate about politicians.
In a democratic country, the person that receives the winning vote wins the political position. Nevertheless, the Constitution provides a term limit that the politician must follow. For example, in the Presidency, a president can only have a six year term and never repeat again. Another limitation is that there is a constitutional provision against political dynasty. Although, it has not yet been legally defined, prohibition of political dynasty has been inculcated to prevent the continuous grasp of a political seat to only one person or family.
Needless to say, even with such limitation, politicians are still getting away with their long term seat. For example, Vice President Binay was the Mayor of Makati for 21 years and yet a mayoral position has a 3 term limit. Binay got way with it due to technicality and probably influence. Another worthy example would be the politicians that let their children run for them such as the Biazon and Guingona.
Looking at the problem, it seems to manifest back on the sole reason or purpose why a politician would run for office. Some new politicians would say that they want to make a difference and that they truly want to represent their people. They believe that they can fix the utterly destructive political system of the country. Ironically, when such politicians are trying to find a solution to fix the problem, they need more time to stay in office. And the more they stay in office, they would most likely grow fond of their political title. This is what you call being eaten up by the system.
Politicians that are constantly running for office and are also constantly winning give the alibi that they are the voice of the people. Yeah screw them. Considering a third person's point of view, it might have some point. The people or electorate can be given the blame why such politician has been there for almost 10 years.
Yet, being a politician, a politician must have at least delikadesa or integrity to uphold. Giving the lame excuse that he wants to run for office because he is the voice of the people is not the sole entire reason that a politician must consider when running for reelection.
I am sadden by the those political families making their children run for their held titles just for the sake of keeping the political title. Did they think that there was some other pure and fresh politician that might do better in the said seat? Isn't giving others the fair and equal opportunity to prove to the masses that they are worthy representing the people the bread and butter of the 1987 Constitution? Probably they have thought of such. However, the ego of man is stronger than its conscience.
In the lighter side, they are those that are notable for not being eaten by the political system. Those people that did not allow their family descendants to cover for them to retain their prestigious title. Some of these people are the Ramos and Magsaysay family. I hope a lot more Filipinos would have their sense of integrity.
From the movie The Social Network, one must think the real purpose of an action. Is it for yourself or for others?
